Environmental Accomplishments
Cenveo Graphic Arts Center constantly strives to be above average in every way. Not only do we have a strong commitment to the highest levels of quality and customer service, we are also committed to being an exemplary civic partner and a leader in the community. We strive to meet or exceed every requirement of state and federal authorities in both our safety and environmental programs.
We ascribe our environmental protection successes to technological improvements, re-engineering, employee training, recycling programs and an environmentally friendly chemical selection process.
The following is a short list of some of our environmental accomplishments.
- Our wastewater flow has been reduced dramatically over the past several years. In 2002, the City of Portland elected to waive our (previously required) annual wastewater permit. We mainly attribute our wastewater flow reduction to improved technology in our Pre-Press department.
- In our Pre-Press Department, Computer to Plate (CTP) technology has completely eliminated the use of film and its by-products of mercury and plastics since 2005.
- The City of Portland waived our storm water permit requirements after we were able to demonstrate that we had removed all threat of chemical residue reaching the storm water system and thus flowing into our rivers.
- In 2001, we replaced an old Catalytic Oxidizer with a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO). The new technology inherent in the RTO has reduced our air-borne emissions (from our web presses) to a negligible level. The RTO’s efficiency of design not only scrubs the air-borne emissions twice before releasing them harmlessly into the atmosphere, it also reuses the hot gases produced during each cycle to process the next cycle. By reusing hot gases repeatedly, we have been able to realize great reductions in the use of natural gas, which is used to heat the unit.
- In 2002, we replaced 247 HID Metal Halide light fixtures with T5HO fluorescent light fixtures. This change produced an estimated annual savings of 337,640 KWH.
- All regulated waste is disposed of in accordance with state and federal requirements. Regulated waste (spent solvent) is re-used as fuel in concrete kilns or re-used in a fuel blending process.
- In 2003, we replaced a Heidelberg sheetfed press with a Komori sheetfed press. Technological advancements in the Komori blanket washing system eliminated the production of waste solvents. This reduced solvent waste each week by approximately 1-2 barrels.
- As part of our Toxic Use Reduction Program, all chemicals being proposed for testing are evaluated for improved environmental and safety characteristics before being permitted within our facility. We do not replace chemicals we are currently using with new chemicals unless it can be proved that they will decrease the hazard to the environment and to the safety of our employees.
- Recycling programs:
a. Both office paper and paper used for commercial printing, are recycled. We partner with the Weyerhaeuser Corporation for our paper recycling needs.
b. Vegetable based ink waste that cannot be recovered by re-milling is disposed of in partnership with Emerald Recycling services, a company who re-uses the ink in a fuel blending technique. This vendor is audited frequently by the Department of Energy (DOE) and has an excellent record of accomplishment.
c. We recycle metals such as used banding material, plates, scrap metal, etc…
